What is the Orton Gillingham approach?
The Orton Gillingham (OG) approach, is a phonics based method that is multisensory, sequential, and systematic. The lessons are provided in a 1:1 environment and are tailored to meet the needs of each student as an individual. The OG approach has been found to be extremely effective in supporting students who are dyslexic or have difficulties in their ability to process language.

Does my child need a diagnosis of dyslexia to attend lessons?
No, your child does not need a diagnosis of any kind to attend a lesson. If your child is struggling with reading, the Orton Gillingham approach can be beneficial.

What can I expect on the first lesson?
We will get orientated and make sure your child is comfortable in the environment. I will then do a diagnostic assessment to evaluate your child’s knowledge of the alphabetic principles and phonological awareness, which will help me establish a baseline. The information that I gain from this first day will help me find a starting point and see the skills that we need to work on and develop future lessons.

Sessions following the diagnostic lesson will be created to meet the needs of your child. I will be constantly reevaluating their progress and moving at a pace that is right for them. The lessons are an hour in length.

How many lessons will my child require per week?
Typically OG practitioners recommend that students attend tutoring sessions 2x per week in order for it to be effective. If this does not fit into your family life, it is recommended that tutoring should be at a minimum of once per week.

How long will we have to attend lessons?
This really depends on many different factors, as each child is different and comes into tutoring with a unique skill set. Their ability to advance is individual based on their age, abilities, and commitment to learning. Progress will be documented and you may choose to stop tutoring at any point throughout the academic term, once you feel they have reached their goals.

What are your hours?
The Burrow is open from 9:00am- 3:00pm Monday- Wednesday and Sunday from 8:00am- 5:00pm. Please contact me to arrange a weekly lesson.

Am I able to watch the lesson?
There is a waiting area outside the tutoring room where you can listen in. It is important for the parent to see the progress of the child, however being in the room can often cause distraction from their learning. Reports with their work will be sent home so that you are able to see their accomplishments.

How does billing and payment work?
Invoices will be sent out at the end of each month. Payment can be made by e-transfer to theliteracyburrow@gmail.com or by personal cheque. Please note that debit or credit are not accepted at this time. Fees are non-refundable and will not be adjusted for sick or vacation days.

Can these lessons be covered by benefits?
If your child has been diagnosed with a learning disability, you are able to apply for a medical tax credit. Please contact your professional tax advisor for additional information on this.

What is your cancelation policy?
I understand that sometimes life happens and you are unable to make your tutoring session. If possible, please cancel within 24 hours of the appointment time. One additional make up session can be arranged per academic term.

It is estimated that 15-20% of the population are affected by a language based learning disability. Dyslexia is the most common cause of reading, writing and spelling difficulties.
